All grade 6 students in Prairie Rose School Division are again being presented with a free book of their choice during the last two weeks of school as a result of a cooperative venture between Prairie Rose School Division and the Prairie Rose Teachers’ Association
PRSD/PRTA Literacy Initiative is a program that has been jointly sponsored by Prairie Rose School Division and the Prairie Rose Teachers’ Association since the 2010-2011 school year. The program demonstrates the shared commitment of the division and its teachers to promoting literacy in our schools.
During phase one, grade six students engaged in literacy conversations and discussed, ranked and voted on their top picks with their classroom teachers. These results were then compiled into a top fifty list, with each classroom allocated votes based on their class sizes. During phase two, grade six students across the school division were invited to choose a free book from their list of the fifty top picks.
At the end of June, school trustees and PRTA reps will distribute the books, with a bookmark and sticker commemorating the project.
Literacy Initiative 2017 was coordinated by Prairie Rose School Division teachers Alvin Gross, Brittany Bandura, Jesse Thomaschewski, Karyn Busch & Stephanie Prokopowich, along with grade six classroom teachers across the school division. Thank you to Murielle MacMillan and Judy Breland at the HCSAO for their help throughout the project. The bookmark and sticker for this year was again designed by former PRSD student Heidi Gross.
