HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA

The government recognizes that adults continue to learn throughout their lives.  Therefore adults do not need to take 30 credits in order to graduate.   The Mature Student Diploma requires only eight credits.

For $35 annual registration fee, adult students can earn a Mature Student Diploma by completing the following requirements:

Four credits at or below the grade 12 level

Four credits at the grade 12 level

Students may have already completed some grade 9-11 high school credit courses. In many cases, these can be applied to the Mature Student Diploma program.

One of these must be an English Language Arts credit, and one must be either Math or Accounting. Students may choose the two remaining credits according to individual needs and interests.

  • Staff is available to assist in the planning of a program of study and the selection of courses.
  • Students are able to complete courses at their own pace.
  • Students are encouraged to establish a workable study schedule based on individual needs and responsibilities.
  • Timelines for course completion are flexible.
  • Students are encouraged to attend or communicate with the centre as often as possible.
  • Certified teachers provide academic support and evaluation for online and local students.
  • Course delivery methods are adapted when necessary to ensure and enhance student learning.

Recognition of Prior Learning:  At the adult ed centre, we recognize that you have continued to learn throughout your life.  Your experiences at home, at work, and in your community have left you with a unique set of abilities, skills and knowledge.  In many cases, you may earn full or partial credit towards a high school course by demonstrating that you have already learned all or part of the content of a course.  For example, if you have been doing your own home renovations, you could bring in photos, blueprints or sketches, and/or you could describe what you have done or write a test.  You and your teacher will discuss the best ways for you to demonstrate your skills and whether there are any gaps in your knowledge of course content.  To learn more about this process, visit www.wplar.ca or one of the many other sites that refer to recognizing prior learning in education or the workplace.  (RPL is also known as PLAR - Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition).

Dual Credits:
Dual credit courses provide opportunities for students working toward a high school diploma to study post-secondary courses and apply them for credit at both the secondary and post-secondary levels. For example, with prior approval, a university Sociology course may be listed on a high school transcript as “Sociology 42U” and counted as one of the credits needed for graduation.  Financial Accounting 42C on a high school transcript would represent a college accounting course that was approved as a dual credit and used as one of the credits needed for graduation.  For more information, go to http://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/ael/all/publications/dc_report.pdf or one of the many other sites that refer to Dual Credits.

The following courses from the school division’s Career and Technology Studies Program provide practical options for earning a high school credit.  Adults should ask about recognition of prior learning for these credits.

Management Skills 40S (first credit)
Management Skills 40S involves both pre-employment orientation (approx 35 hours), and a work experience at a site mutually agreed on by student and sponsor (approx 75 hours) for a total of 110 hours. The pre-employment orientation provides an opportunity for students to identify and explore career options that coincide with that student’s skills and interests.   The student will create a portfolio of real life experience that serves to clarify career objectives, establish professional relationships, and to develop employability skills. This course is a pre-requisite to all other Career Internship credits.

Additional CTS Credits
A second Career Internship credit can be obtained by updating the portfolio and completing 110 hours of work experience in one of the following areas: Business, Information Technology, Industrial Technology, or Human Services Technology. Additional credits up to a maxiumum of eight can be earned in this way. Talk to our staff for more information and how your prior learning and experiences can be recognized.

Senior Years Apprenticeship credits
Did you know that you can earn up to eight high school credits as you accumulate your apprenticeship hours?  We can help you complete the paperwork to register as an apprentice, learn about tax credits for you and your employer, and ensure your hours become high school credits.  To learn more, go to http://www.gov.mb.ca/tce/apprent/apprentice/apprenticeship_hs.html
