School Trustee Elections 2018

Every four years we have an opportunity to participate in local civic elections, including the election of local school trustees. Whether your interest is as a candidate or a voter, the goal of this page is to provide you with the information you need. This page includes two sections, Voters and Become a Trustee.

Voters

In the province of Manitoba, a General Election is held every four years in all School Divisions and Municipalities on the third Wednesday in October. This year the election will be held on October 24, 2018. Please continue to check this site as information will be updated as it becomes available. Become a Trustee

In the province of Manitoba, a General Election is held every four years in all School Divisions and Municipalities on the third Wednesday in October. This year the election will be held on October 24, 2018. Qualifications for the position of School Board Trustee include:

  • Canadian Citizenship
  • Age 18 or over
  • Resident in Prairie Rose School Division, and have been for at least 6 months prior to elections
Nomination Forms

Nomination forms (form 13) will be accepted commencing September 12, 2018 during the nomination period. The deadline to file nomination form is September 18, 2018.

Candidates seeking election for School Trustee must obtain on their Nomination Form (form 13) a minimum of 25 signatures of voters or not less than 1% of the voters of the ward (whichever is the lesser). Voters who have signed the candidate’s nomination form, must have their name on the Prairie Rose School Division Voters List for the school division ward in which the candidate is seeking election. As the names will be subject to verification on the Voters List, candidates should obtain extra names to ensure that the minimum number of voters is met. The names of voters signing a candidate’s Nomination Form will be verified when the candidate files their Nomination form.

Filing a Nomination Form

Candidates seeking election for School Trustee must file a Nomination Form, in person, with the Senior Election Official (SEO). The SEO will accept Nomination Forms during the nomination period. The nomination period begins Wednesday, September 12, 2018 and runs until Tuesday, September 18, 2018. Candidates must file a Nomination Form in person with the SEO between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Prairie Rose School Division Administration Office, 45 Main Street South, Carman, Manitoba during the nomination period.

Withdrawal of Nomination

Any candidate may withdraw their nomination only if a nominated candidate remains to fill the office to be elected. The withdrawal must be in writing and submitted in-person to the Senior Election Official by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19, 2018.

Acclamation

Where only the required number of candidates are nominated, the Senior Election Official will declare the candidate(s) elected by acclamation at the end of the withdrawal deadline, 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 19, 2018.

Candidate’s Name on Ballot

Candidates’ names on ballots appear in random order. The random order is determined by a draw which will take place at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2018.

Please be advised that:

  • the candidate name will appear on the ballot exactly as it is written on the Nomination Paper (in the Acceptance by Candidate Section), and in accordance with the following format:
    • Ballots are printed with candidates’ First Name, followed by the SURNAME (in uppercase letters), listed in the order determined by a random draw.
    • Middle names are not allowed.
    • Candidates cannot use identification such as a nickname bearing no relation to the legal name, or any title, honour, decoration or degree (e.g. “Mr.”, “Dr.”, “Rec.”, etc.)
